Forever With Unopened Eye

I wiped the dirt from my hands. Well it was done. I just wish it wasn’t so hard on the kids. They loved that cat. I can admit it now, I liked the little fur ball too. I –

Aww, shoot.  Not again.

I watch with a mixture of horror and admiration as the freshly packed ground shifts in front of me. First one paw, then another. Then as had happened 7 times prior, out pops a little black fur covered head out of the ground.

Meow!

Blam!

“Dammit Kristi! That’s eight times!” I yelled.

Thunk! I looked at the shovel in my hands now covered in blood.

The kids and I looked upon the gravestone with its engraving.

I pray to God that she may lie

Forever with unopened eye

“Dad, thanks for letting us bring Snowball. I think she enjoyed the funeral.”

Meow!

  1. I smiled when I saw the cat picture, but that quickly took a turn.😂 Is this one of those mind meld things or am I just not interpreting it correctly? I find that I’m left with questions. That makes a good story though.😆

  2. That was an excellent homage to Poe. Seems I remember one of his stories had a black cat sealed behind a wall, but I could be wrong on the details. Gives a chilling spin to a cat with 9 lives. Also didn’t notice that the two lines rhyme until reading your story.

    1. There is a Poe story like that. Though I had forgotten about it until I went to look it up. It’s very much like “The Tell Tale Heart”. I did want to do a sort of Poe-ish type story and the lines given sort of drew me to the not quite dead. I’m glad you liked it. 😊
