Fragile: A Burning Haibun

Fragile by Sting

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the color of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
Blood, flesh and steel
Color the evening sun
Rain stains our minds

Stay this final act
Clinch a[n] argument
Violence born an angry star

How fragile rain
Like tears
Say we are

The rain
A star
How fragile
Blood color evening sun
Argument violence born
Fragile tears we are

This is from a prompt on dVerse. Write a burning haibun using the lyrics from a favorite song to inspire you.

Sting has always had literary or story telling nature to his songs. Fragile from his album Nothing Like the Sun is a favorite of mine. Using one of his songs was an easy choice for me. I like how with each ‘burn’ the meaning and tone change. I can imagine the song playing in the background as you read through each one. I hope you enjoy!

  1. Stew, Sting is a natural poet. I love this song and so many others of his. I like how you distilled it into a beautiful haiku. That last line of the haiku was worth the exercise ❤

      1. Stew, I tell it like it is. Great riff off of Da Man (Sting.) I used to have a mighty crush on him. Remember that music video for, “Fortress Around Your Heart”? Oh man.

  2. That’s a wonderful choice, Stew, I love Sting and the literary style of his songs. Nothing Like the Sun is one of my favourite albums. I too imagined the song playing in the background. I love the way your burning haibun simmered and then burst into flame.
