The blazing sun stood in the sky like a sentinel; cold unfeeling, waiting for those under its gaze to die.
“Why are we out in this heat?” whined Charley.
“We’re getting treasure,” replied Justin.
I shook my head. Charley loved to wine and dine the old ladies. That he would sweet talk them out of half their money didn’t seem to bother him or them more times than not. Justin, he was in it purely for the money. Whatever it would get him money he was in it. Me? This was my spiritual journey, mecca pilgrimage, path to nirvana. Where can we find light in this never-ending shade? We must travel out of our cave and into the light. Embrace the sun and let it burn away the dross that shades our eyes.
“I think I found something!”
We found the Face of God.
A prosery prompt from dVerse. Write a piece of prose, fiction or non-fiction, up to 144-words, using the given line – “where can we find light in this never-ending shade?” –From Amanda Gorman, “The Hill We Climb”. This is my prosery. Hope you enjoy!
This is a compelling and layered piece, Stuart! The interplay between physical heat and spiritual seeking creates a gripping narrative, and the ending is thought-provoking!
Much love,
David

Thanks David! It’s always good when I can provoke a thought. 😁

That took me where I didn’t expect to go, Stew. Is God peeking round that Last Trump-ing Sun or in a grain of sand on that dry road?

Sometimes going where we don’t expect takes us to great places. Other times it just takes us to some guy’s blog. Lol. Where to find God is a question that had taken man on many a searching road. Seek and ye shall find. 😉

Knock and the door (or gate) shall be opened unto you…
Comment and ye may see a glimpse of some guy baring his soul, or some gal sharing her soul bird.
My own piece ends:
In this never-ending shade, there’s a movement at last: the clouds part, and through the crack filter the motes of sunshine, faltering and hesitating like the Song Thrush at the Gate to the Garden.

It’s funny how two lives motivated by very different things can intersect each other. Great writing, Stew. Your story reminds me of Bob Dylan’s song, “Isis.”

Had to look up that song. Dylan of course is a master singer/story teller so I take it as a huge compliment that it brought it to mind.

It’s one of my favorite Dylan songs.

Very well-written, and enjoyed…this story could extend…

Thank you! It could but don’t know if the story would be that compelling. At least not the glimpses I’ve had of it. lol Though how three got together does some intriguing.

An interesting short piece. I’d like to know more about them, three such different individuals. I imagine them in a sort of Waiting for Godot type scenario.
Thank you for writing to the prompt!

Thank you! I see it as more of a hunting for god or their god as it may be. I think it would be interesting to see how they got together and ended up in this spot. Though maybe not interesting enough to write it out. haha

I wonder if you both saw the same face of God though?
Justin should be terrified I think

I wanted to put a quote of the Bible verses that said “And he said, Show me, I pray thee, thy glory. … And he said, Thou canst not see my face; for man shall not see me and live.” at the end but I was constrained by the 144 words.
I don’t think they saw the same face but I believe they did come to the same end. As do all eventually that see the face of God. 😉

Thank you. The quoted piece does ask a poignant question. It made me think of the desert and that brought forth this.
