/ Parent’s Lament

Honestly, it all gets to be a bit much, the running around and such, the back and forth and to and fro, pick up and here we go, I can hardly see what it is meant to be with all the round and round.
This is a dVerse prompt for a quadrille: Write a poem of exactly 44 words, including the word honest. I hope you enjoy!
Yeah it’s bullshit, being a parent. If I would gave truly known what it entailed I wouldn’t have bothered

There is something to be said for when they’re all grown. I would still do it but I don’t know how many of us would if we truly knew ALL that goes into it. Even still I would say parenting is a blessing. WORK but a blessing.

Having to do it all on my own with no family support I don’t feel very blessed. But I’m glad you at least found purpose in it. Wiping down the walls all the time and doing laundry everyday isn’t my idea of a good time.

Oh, those years are hard! And then you blink, and they’re out of college and working as a rocket scientist, or taking a gap year after their PhD in jazz arranging… in other words, it all pays off. And the love that emanates from them forever is worth it.

You always hope for the best when you’re raising them. Mine are in their early 20’s now and we raised good people. That’s all you can really hope for.

Sometimes it seems parenting is just a constant frenzy.

Often feels that way too. But it is frenzy towards a hopeful end. ☺

Your insightful Quad makes me realize how lucky we were in the 60s and early 70s …. not a lot of running to and fro, back and forth … life was a breeze compared to today’s parenting frenzy.

There’s a lot for parents today, social media, information overload, the fear of declining prospects. But there was a lot back then too. Sexual revolution, segregation, Vietnam. Every generation has it’s challenges and rewards. Though I am glad I’m not raising children any more. Parenting no matter what generation is not easy.

Your parent’s lament took me back to when my daughter was little – she’s a parent herself now – and you captured it well, Stew. I love that you started with the word ‘honestly’.

Honestly, I had to. hehe But I think it’s something that if parents are telling the truth we’ve all felt. It’s just not said out loud enough.
