It was dessert that did me in; the upside down pineapple cake, looking up at me from the small white plate.
It was my grandmother’s favorite cake to bake, her special recipe, made special only because she was the one to make it.
I looked up at her, with I’m sure the beginnings of tears in my eyes,
I can’t eat this …
That’s okay,
The words sweet, like the brown sugar or maraschino cherries that topped the upside down dessert.
I’ll eat your piece
This was for a dVerse prompt: So for today’s Poetics, I would love a presence of food in your poems. You can employ any form but touch upon food; vegetables, fruits, meat, dairy, desserts you love or hate. It could be about why you love/abhor cooking/baking, your most memorable/miserable meal ever, your relationship with food…the possibilities are endless. I hope you enjoy. 😊
The memories that food evoke! I think pineapple upside down cake is one of the most delicious looking cakes. Maybe you should bake one to honour her memory.

This is so sweet! The memory of her graciousness attached to the memory of the dish you didn’t want. Love can be expressed with food in many ways, including, “I’ll eat your piece.”❤️

I enjoyed how the memory of the food was more important to you than the food. Well written.

Both grandma and mom (and now me) made/make it in a cast iron skillet. So sorry you weren’t able to eat grandma’s cake. Glad she rolled with it.

My grandmother would make it in one of those deep cast iron skillet too. I keep saying I should make it one day but haven’t gotten around to doing it. I should in honor of my grandmom. Thanks for reading Li! 😊

How cool is that. So you *did* eat the cake? If so, you definitely need to make one in your grandmom’s honor. You are most welcome.

I’ve never eaten upside-down pineapple cake, Stew, mainly because pineapple does weird things to my tongue. But I remember my grandmother baking other cakes of which I would eat everyone’s piece! I love the simile ‘sweet, like the brown sugar or maraschino cherries that topped the upside down dessert’.

Thanks Kim. 😊 Yeah, you probably wouldn’t want to have it if pineapple does weird things to your tongue. lol Funny enough it was my grandmother’s special cake. It’s sweet and buttery with the zip of pineapple.
