Don’t protest my love
Let me love you true and real
Let not the word no, trip from your lips
To fall on my pleas
Remonstrations against me
Like darts thrown against my heart
Pierce and prick, bleed my feelings
Don’t protest, say yes
This is for a dVerse prompt: Write a poem of exactly 44 words including the word protest. Hope you enjoy!
I did a whole other poem with the word protest and forgot it was Quadrille Monday so it is quite a bit over 44 words. Haha.😳 You can read it here https://theauthorstew.ca/2026/08/24/doth-thy-protest-too-much-or-too-little/
Ahh! May the darts of ‘no’ not pierce your heart! I love your Q, Stew!

Yes… sometimes we simply want to say yes.

Most of us went to politics or injustice, you went to love. A lovely interpretation!

I went with both with my initial poem, Doth Thy Protest Too Much or Too Little, but I remembered it was a quadrille and modified the beginning to this one. 😁 Thanks for reading!

Thanks.😁 I did have that line in my head when I wrote it.

Well done for finding romance in the prompt word, Stew! I love the allusion to Shakespeare’s “The lady doth protest too much, methinks”. I can also hear the Bard in the lines:
“Like darts thrown against my heartPierce and prick, bleed my feelings”.

Funny you mention that, in the original poem I did, Doth Thy Protest Too Much or Too Little, I quoted that scene and line. After I finished it I remembered it was a Quadrille so I modified the beginning for this one. 😄 Thanks for reading Kim!
