Tragically Hip Survivor

It started, oddly enough, about 8 miles outside of Bobcaygeon on highway 36 towards Big Island. It was a weird place to start an invasion. Most people think it’s because it’s out of the way and they were looking for a place to happen. I have other thoughts. Though nobody cares what I think, at least they didn’t back then.

I was listening to my music at work, some song about being scared by fireworks while on blow, at the High Dough Bakery & Coffee shop. There’s something to be said about being 38 years old trying to sell the next great Canadian novel and working at some small snack shop off the highway. Girls don’t exactly line up for it, but it’s a good life if you don’t weaken.

Then the invasion happened. New Orleans is sinking and the Starpainters are taking over now.

This is for a dVerse prompt: Write a piece of prose, up to or exactly 144 words, including the given line. The line: “The Starpainters are taking over now” from Starpainters by Gordon Downie
