Once in a lifetime
But twice in death
You’ll come apart like a torn piece of paper
Pulled from a bound notebook
Crumpled and bound to be thrown away
Don’t resist
But fight like hell
This is your renewal, a rebirth,
Like Jesus on day three
After an all night bender
Say it with me
This too shall pass
Perhaps like a bowling ball through a straw
Or Taco Bell on a Friday night
Sometimes like preparing for a colonoscopy
But this too shall pass
After all it’s only once in a lifetime
This is for a dVerse prompt: Now write a poem in the first person that begins with “Once in a lifetime”. Think of a similar three-word movement (anger/sun/love) and develop it in your poem.
This is a bit off from the prompt in that I didn’t do it in first person. But I did start it with “Once in a lifetime”. 😁 I did do a second poem that included the first person – In A Blind Alley.
The colonscopy reference was also very good and fellt real

I was immediately drawn to the torn paper metaphor, Stew, which resonated with me, and I found hope in the renewal and rebirth. Oh, I know about preparing for a colonoscopy! Yes, it passes, and you forget it with time.

I really enjoyed the way this refuses to let rebirth become too solemn. Jesus on day three after an all-night bender, bowling balls through straws, Taco Bell, colonoscopies…lol you keep dragging the grand spiritual metaphor back into the ridiculousness of being human. Fun piece. 🩷
